Careers in Project Management
How to break into project management and grow, open roles on our team, and a talent pool where companies find project managers.
How to become a project manager
- Start where you are. Volunteer to coordinate a small project in your current role — an event, a process improvement, a system rollout. Most PMs start as "accidental" project managers.
- Learn the fundamentals. Work through our free guides and practise with the tools.
- Get an entry credential. The Google certificate, CAPM® or PRINCE2® Foundation help get past CV filters. Compare them on our certifications page.
- Build a portfolio. Keep anonymised artefacts: a charter, a schedule, a risk register, a status report, a lessons-learned summary. Enter our monthly challenge for portfolio pieces with expert feedback.
- Target adjacent roles such as project coordinator, PMO analyst, Scrum Master or delivery associate.
- Level up to the PMP® once you have the required experience.
Typical career path
| Stage | Typical titles | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Project coordinator, PMO analyst, junior PM | Scheduling, documentation, reporting |
| Mid | Project manager, Scrum Master, delivery manager | Owning delivery of whole projects |
| Senior | Senior PM, programme manager | Multiple related projects, benefits, senior stakeholders |
| Leadership | PMO director, portfolio manager, head of delivery | Strategy, governance, capability building |
